History
Background
Certificate of Incorporation No. 12,808 was granted to the South Cariboo Cross-Country Ski Society under the Societies Act on December 20, 1976. On September 12, 1986 the name of the organization was changed to 100 Mile Nordic Ski Society.
Objectives
Article 2 of our Constitution states that the objectives of the Society are:
- To operate as a non-profit society
- To promote and engage in the sport of cross country skiing and activities associated therewith
- The Society is not a social club.
In keeping with these objectives coaching programs are offered to children and adults with instruction for both recreational and competitive skiing. The “Nordics” also host the annual Cariboo Marathon as well as major competitions which have included the National Junior Championships, BC Championships, Western Canadian Championships and BC Cup Races.
Operating History
In 1986 the 100 Mile Nordics, because of better snow conditions, moved their operations from the 108 and Lower Lake Ski Trails up to the 99 Mile hill. The race trails at 99 Mile while laid out by the 100 Mile Nordics were constructed for the B.C. Forest Service by Ainsworth Lumber.
Recreational ski trails including the 20km Marathon loop, the 5.5km Marathon start and the downtown connector were subsequently constructed by the Nordics. All of the above including the 99 Mile race trails have since their construction been groomed, track set and maintained by the Ski Society.
Depending on snow conditions the ski trails may be in use from Dec.1 through to the end of March. All activities of the 100 Mile Nordics are conducted by volunteers; no Society members are paid.
Facilities and Equipment
Grooming and track setting equipment include a PB 200 snow cat, a yamaha snowmobile, a single Bombardier twin-track snowmobile as well as a snowmobile drawn Ginzu groomer, roller, track setter and snow renovator.
